Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Check out some of our Kansas City Heating and cooling pros’ answers to the most common FAQs we encounter related to HVAC systems

What Size HVAC System Should I Have?

Generally speaking, there is no rule of thumb for sizing a system to a home. Depending upon the construction of your home, one ton of air conditioning can adequately cool anywhere from 400 to 800 square feet of home. The only way to ensure the size of the A/C system you purchase will be big enough to properly cool your home, but not any larger than you need, is to have your home’s individual heating and cooling needs evaluated by a licensed HVAC contractor.

What Exactly Is A Heat Pump?

Simply put, a heat pump is an all-in-one heating and air conditioning system that works year-round to keep you comfortable. During warmer months in Kansas City, a heat pump will work as a normal air conditioner, it extracts heat from inside the home and transfers it to the outdoor air. In the fall and winter months, however, the process reverses and the HVAC unit collects heat from the outdoor air and transfers it inside your home.

What Temperature Should I Set My Thermostat To?

Well depending on where you live and degrees of seasonality you experience, the time of year becomes a big factor for ideal temperature settings. For Kansas City summer months, the average temperature setting is 78°-80°, while in the winter roughly 70°-72° seems to be the more ideal. When leaving your home, try to avoid making drastic thermostat temperature adjustments. For Examply, we recommend you not set your temperature back more than 5°, as this can cause your AC unit to work harder to achieve your desired home temperature.

How Is An HVAC System’s Efficiency Measured?

The most common way to measure a heating and cooling system’s efficiency is the S.E.E.R. (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), which is the amount of cooling your HVAC system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity. For example, a 4-ton unit could have a S.E.E.R. efficiency rating of 14, 15, or 16. The higher the S.E.E.R. the more “efficient” your HVAC system will be. The S.E.E.R. rating of any given unit will generally range anywhere from 13 to 17.

Should I Cover My Air Conditioner Or Heat Pump In The Fall or Winter?

Covering your heating and cooling unit is not necessary, especially if you have a heat pump that runs the majority of the year. In fact, covering the entire HVAC unit may trap moisture and be bad for it. If you’re simply concerned about leaves and debris getting inside the housing, especially in the fall, short covers can be purchased online or in some home improvement stores.

What are the Benefits of HVAC zoning?

In most cases, Zoned HVAC allows you to have better comfort control, lower energy bills, as well as higher energy efficiency. We recommend you ask your HVAC contractor about zoning HVAC options and if it is right for you.
