What Is A Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner?
When you think of air conditioning, depending on your current and past homes, you may think of window air conditioners or central air conditioning systems. Those are the most common air conditioning systems in homes today. However, a third option exists that is rapidly gaining popularity: the ductless or mini-split air conditioner.
How Does a Ductless Air Conditioner Work?
A ductless mini-split air conditioner has two separate units, much like a central AC system. There is an outside condenser unit and an indoor air handling unit. These two units are connected via a conduit that passes through the exterior wall between the two units.
The outside condenser unit looks much like that of a central AC unit. The inside unit, on the other hand, has a unique look that is the signature of the ductless, mini-split AC system. The inside unit is usually a white box that hangs from the ceiling or the wall on the exterior wall of the space. This unit handles all the air movement in the space and is where the controls for the system are located. When the inside unit is hung from the ceiling or high on the wall, it is usually controlled with a remote control.
Ductless, mini-split systems can have up to four inside units that connect to a single outdoor unit. Each inside unit is located within a given space such as a bedroom or a family room—so you can cool each room separately.
Who Can Benefit from Using a Ductless Mini-Split?
Ductless mini-split systems are best used when central AC systems are not feasible. A mini-split system is perfect for multi-family housing such as duplexes and small apartment buildings. Instead of putting in ducts and hooking up a central AC system to each unit, the mini-split system can be installed without ducts and can use a single condenser for up to four housing units.
Mini-splits also work well in older homes that do not have ductwork installed or smaller homes where there is not enough room for ductwork. Most AC systems use ducts to move cool air throughout the home. Some homes, however, do not have ducts installed. They use radiant heating systems that do not require ducts. A ductless, mini-split allows part or all of the home to be cooled without adding ducts.
When adding an addition to a home, many homeowners find that their existing central AC is too small to handle the additional space. A mini-split system is ideal for cooling additions. It is also ideal when adding an apartment or mother-in-law suite in the house. It offers that unit complete control over its own cooling.
