Geothermal Heating & Cooling Systems

Geothermal heat pumps are among the most efficient and comfortable heating and cooling technologies currently available—using the earth’s natural heat to provide heating and cooling to your home. These units are among the longest lasting heating and air conditioning systems on the market, and they can provide energy savings up to 70 percent more than traditional furnaces and air conditioners.

How Geothermal Heat Pumps Work

Using electricity as its energy source heat pumps can both heat and cool homes through means of heat transfer—which is actually a very efficient process. Heat naturally flows downhill, which means it moves from a location with a high temperature to a location with a lower temperature. A heat pump uses a small amount of energy to reverse this natural process, and so it moves heat from a location with a low temperature to a location with a higher temperature. During the summertime, heat is pulled from your home and transferred outside, which helps cool your home. During the cold winter months, heat pumps transfer heat from the outside air to your home.

Benefits of Geothermal Heat Pumps

Geothermal Heat Pumps Are Cost Effective

We won’t sugarcoat it—installing a geothermal system can be expensive. Despite their high initial costs, geothermal heat pumps offer an incredible long-term savings opportunity. Most geothermal heat pumps pay for themselves in as few as five to six years, which means you’ll experience a significant return on investment and years of future home comfort. Also, these systems last several decades—with proper maintenance. Since geothermal heat pumps draw heat directly from the ground, you will not have to deal with gas or oil companies. This means no more high utility costs, no more fluctuating fuel rates, and no more service outages.

Geothermal Heat Pumps Are Highly Efficient

Geothermal heat pumps are the most efficient residential heating and air conditioning systems available, with heating efficiencies 50-70 percent higher than conventional systems in the winter and cooling efficiencies 20-40 percent higher in the summer.

Geothermal Heat Pumps Are Quieter

Unlike other heating systems, a heat pump doesn’t have a noisy outdoor unit that will disrupt the serenity of your outdoor environment. The indoor unit’s noise is comparable to a refrigerator.

Geothermal Heat Pumps Use Clean, Renewable Energy

A heat pump generates energy from the sun! There is no onsite combustion—which, in turn, means there are no carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, or other greenhouse gas emissions.

Geothermal Heat Pumps Are Low Maintenance

A furnace or conventional AC unit only last about 15 years, while a geothermal heat pump can last an upwards of 25 years! The heating system has fewer moving parts and is protected from the wear and tear of outdoor elements like rain, snow, ice, and extreme temperatures, so it requires minimal maintenance.

Geothermal Heat Pumps Have Tax Incentives

Best of all, there are currently excellent geothermal heat pump tax credits available for the purchase and installation of an efficient unit. For qualified HVAC improvements, homeowners (for primary and secondary residences, not rentals) in the area may be able to claim 25C tax credits equal to 10 percent of the installed costs (up to $500 maximum). The extended tax credit is in effect for all qualifying systems and products installed during the 2012 and 2013 calendar years and expires on December 31, 2016. For qualified geothermal improvements, homeowners may be able to claim HR 1424 tax credits equal to 30 percent of the total installed costs.
